Tammika Speaks — It's Yours, Go Get It

College preparedness

Getting Into College Is Hard. Thriving in College Can Be Harder.

Sending future adults to college is about more than filling out applications, meeting deadlines, and getting the right test scores.

College is a whole different world—and you need to know how to navigate it before you get there.

Most traditional “college prep” focuses on getting students into college: FAFSA, the Common App, service hours, SAT scores, essays, applications, and acceptance letters.

And yes, all of that matters.

But getting accepted is only the beginning.

The whole experience

What Does“Thriving in College”Actually Mean?

Have you ever really asked yourself what “staying in college” actually means?

If you’re physically there but aren’t doing anything academically, are you really in college?

If you’re getting straight A’s but have only ever seen the inside of your classrooms, your dorm, the library, and the caf… are you really experiencing college?

College is one of the first places where freedom and responsibility arrive on the same day.

But without understanding the demands that come with that freedom, staying in college can become challenging.

And I don’t mean just staying enrolled.

Staying academically eligible. Staying financially afloat. Staying mentally and emotionally grounded. Staying connected. Staying safe. Staying engaged.

Staying focused enough to graduate — without being so focused that you completely miss the experience.

Because college is an EXPERIENCE.

We’re not preparing future adults to go to campus, sit in a dorm, attend class, come back, and repeat for four years.

Part of the value of physically attending college is the whole developmental experience: relationships, leadership, exposure, community, independence, mistakes, networking, discovery, FUN — and learning how to manage all of that while still handling your business.

College preparedness shouldn’t end when the acceptance letter arrives.

That’s when a whole different kind of preparation begins. Lemme Show You What I Mean

Let’s get into it

But Are You PREPARED?!

…Heavy on PREPARED.

Getting prepared for college requires two different—but parallel—tracks. One prepares future adults to get where they want to go. The other prepares them for what happens once they get there.

Both matter.

Get Ready to

GO

Can I successfully get into the college I choose?

Here, we look at what it takes to walk onto the campus of your choice.

This work helps a college see not only that you’re prepared to study there, but that you can contribute to and succeed within their campus community. It’s also about making sure you understand what you’re choosing—because finding the right college isn’t just about whether they choose you. You’re choosing them, too!

  • Applications
  • Testing
  • Scholarships
  • Financial Aid
  • Deadlines
  • Requirements
  • College Selection
  • Service Hours
  • Decisions

Getting positioned to be accepted is the goal of this track.

But we already know that getting accepted is only the beginning…

Get Ready to

GROW

Can I successfully navigate the academic, personal, and social responsibilities of college?

This is the part of college preparedness that often gets overlooked.

Studying for an exam in high school can be completely different from studying for one in college. Managing your schedule is different when no one is reminding you where you need to be. Communicating with a teacher is different when that teacher becomes a professor who may have hundreds of students. Making good decisions feels different when there isn’t an adult standing nearby to help you make them.

These are the things people don’t always talk about—but every college student needs.

And we’re not just going to talk about them…

Before you ever need these skills on a college campus, we’ll start forming habits, changing behaviors, and practicing how to use them in your life now.

  • Organization
  • Self-Management
  • Time Management
  • Communication
  • Self-Advocacy
  • Accountability
  • Independence
  • Decision-Making

Because independence isn’t the destination…

This Is The Destination…

THRIVE IN COLLEGE

Can I successfully manage college life, make the grades, grow, and thrive while I’m there?

This is where those two tracks come together to create a future adult who is ready to take on the full college experience.

Being truly prepared for college means being ready to navigate the application process, survive freshman orientation, and then wake up the next morning ready for what comes next.

It means showing up on campus with the confidence, skills, habits, attitude, and abilities to become an amazing student and take advantage of the experience happening around you.

Because we’re not trying to simply remain enrolled long enough to receive a degree.

It’s learning how to manage the freedom and responsibility of college life while building relationships, discovering new interests, making mistakes, developing independence, creating community, having FUN, learning who you are—and yes, handling your business.

It means knowing how to walk into a professor’s office and advocate for yourself. Knowing what happens when nobody makes you go to class. Knowing how to manage $300 when it has to last three weeks. Knowing how to meet people. Knowing how to join things. Knowing how to go to the dopest party and still get your behind to your 9 a.m. class.

That’s what “THRIVING in college” means here.

Learning. Building. Growing. Succeeding.

And that’s College Preparedness…

So? How Prepared Are You?

And let’s please not forget about

Campus Life

Live Your Life… But Handle Your Business.

College is more than classes, papers, exams, and a degree.

If you’re going to physically attend college, BE THERE.

Join the club. Go to the game. Run for student government. Check out the fraternity or sorority. Go to Homecoming. Meet people who grew up completely differently than you did. Try something you’ve never done before. Go to the party. Stay up too late laughing with your friends every once in a while. Make memories.

LIVE.

Because some of the most important parts of the college experience will never appear on a syllabus.

Campus life gives future adults opportunities to build relationships, discover new interests, develop leadership skills, create community, expand their networks, experience different cultures and perspectives, make mistakes and grow from them, and figure out who they are when they have the freedom to make more of their own choices.

And that freedom is exactly why we need to talk about it.

College may be the first time no one is asking where you’re going, who you’re with, when you’ll be back, whether you finished your homework, or why you’re still asleep at 2:00 in the afternoon.

You CAN go to the party. You CAN stay out all night. You CAN skip class.
You CAN build a whole entire life for yourself.

In fact, I want you to.

But somewhere in the middle of all that freedom, fun, responsibility, and figuring-it-out…

YOU still have to remember that somebody is paying $28,000 a year for you to GO TO CLASS.

Freedom means learning that

“I CAN” and “I SHOULD”

are two completely different decisions.

That’s why College Preparedness doesn’t teach future adults
to avoid campus life.

We build the skills that prepare them for it—
because college life is where they’ll have to use them.

How do I choose what to join—including Greek life—and balance it with academics?

How do I recognize unsafe situations?

How do I handle parties, alcohol, relationships, sex, consent, and peer pressure?

How do I manage friendships, roommates, conflict, and boundaries?

How do I have FUN without constantly having to recover from my fun?

And when I inevitably make a bad decision—because I’m human—how do I recover, learn from it, and move forward?

The goal isn’t to send future adults to college afraid of their freedom.

And it’s certainly not to expose them to a freedom they’ve never known before and set them up to fail.

The goal is to prepare them for it.

We want to help you understand that freedom doesn’t mean the absence of responsibility.

It means taking ownership of it.

Because when no one is standing there telling you what to do, when to do it, where to be, or when to come home, the responsibility for making those decisions doesn’t disappear.

It becomes yours.

College Preparedness gives future adults the opportunity to start practicing that ownership before the stakes get higher and the supervision goes lower.

You can have FUN.But you still have to handle your business.

But Wait a Minute Now…

DON’T GET IT TWISTED I’m Not Going to Do It for You.

Ms. Tammika doesn’t do it for you.

I help you figure out what needs to be done. I teach you the skills to do it. I help you organize how you’re going to do it. I hold you accountable while you’re learning to do it.

And eventually…

You don’t need me to help you do it anymore!

That’s the goal.

College Preparedness isn’t about replacing your parent, teacher, counselor, or anyone else who has been reminding you about deadlines, keeping you organized, making sure things get done, or telling you what comes next.

It’s about helping you develop the skills, habits, systems, and confidence to take ownership of those responsibilities for yourself.

Because eventually, your parent won’t be standing over your shoulder. Your teacher won’t remind you. And I won’t be there either.

But you will be.

And we need YOU to be prepared to handle it.

So… You Ready to Get Prepared?

Let’s GO!

Let’s figure out what you already have, what you still need, and what it’s going to take to get you ready for college.
